History of Phinney-Walker car clocks.
One of the most famous and highly regarded manufacturers of vintage car clocks was the Phinney-Walker Company in the USA. This company was established in New York in 1903. In the veteran and vintage era, this company designed and manufactured mechanical automobile clocks. These clocks were exported around the world and were fitted into a wide variety of makes and models including the prestige makes such as Rolls Royce and the more common automobiles produced by Ford and General Motors.
One of the highly regarded clocks produced by Phinney-Walker was an 8 day clock that was wound and set by rotating the outer rim. Known as a rim-wind or bezel-wind clock this clock was commonly fitted as an accessory into vintage Model T Fords, Chevrolets and Buicks. The photos below show two versions of the Phinney-Walker rim wind car clock. On the right is the version known as the "Embassy" which was one of the most popular Phinney-Walker clocks produced in the mid-1920s. The company also produced rear view mirror clocks which were a popular accessory on the early Ford V8 cars and other automobiles during the 1930s.
From the 1930s the Phinney Walker Company became more of a marketing company than a producer of automobile clocks. The company was active until the 1970s. In the later period of the company the production of clocks was outsourced to many different companies located in Germany (Semca), the USA, Japan and Switzerland. In addition to the highly regarded automobile clocks, the Phinney-Walker Company is also well known for marketing travel alarm clocks in the 1950s.
