Development of vintage car clocks

Portable timepieces date back many centuries. In the 1700s and 1800s travel by carriage was popular and a major advancement in portable timepieces occured when French watchmakers perfected a shockproof movement for carriage clocks. Shortly after the invention of the automobile clock at the end of the 19th century clock manufacturers began to produce a new type of clock designed for this fast developing form of transportation - the car clock. Within the first decade of the 20th century a wide variety of car clocks were being produced ranging from pocket watches that were placed in leather holders or attached to dash boards or steering wheels (often referred to as automobile watches) to substantial brass clocks that were mounted onto the firewall or the dash.

These first car clocks were widely marketed as after-market accessories and as the car clock grew in popularity a number of companies began to specialise in the production of these clocks including Smith & Sons, Jaeger, Phinney-Walker, Waltham, Seth Thomas, Chelsea and Boston. Some of the early manufacturers such as Stewart and Smith and Sons produced instrument sets which incorporated a speedometer and clock. Many of the clock companies produced similar clocks for both the marine and automotive market.

The winding mechanisms in the early car clocks evolved from key wind clocks to stem-wind and rim-wind. The range of clocks available included clocks that could be integrated into rear-view mirrors, glove boxes and gearshifts.By the 1920s to 1930s most of the major automobile producers began to incorporate clocks into their cars as standard equipment. During the 1930s and 1940s, the production of electric automobile clocks increased dramatically and this trend continued into the 1950s when the market was dominated by electric clocks and most manufacturers ceased production of mechanical car clocks.

A wide variety of early automobile clocks were used on the veteran and vintage era Ford automobiles. In the first two decades of production of Ford automobiles, the Ford Motor Company did not produce any clocks for the Ford cars and these early Fords did not come equipped with clocks as standard equipment. However a wide variety clock manufacturers in the early 1900s produced automobile clocks that were fitted to these early Ford cars as accessories. These included Phinney Walker, Chelsea, Elgin, Waltham, New Haven and many more. In the late 1920s a number of these manufacturers began to produce clocks for Ford under license and these official Ford accessory clocks were sold through Ford dealers. We sell a wide range of original mechanical clocks for the Model T, Model A and Early V8 Ford cars.
